Abstract

Zoroastrianism refers to a bestower of the transcendent intellect that, in its attributes and characteristics, reflects a facet of divinity akin to wisdom or the hypostasis of the spirit in Judaism and Christianity. This manifestation of divinity, which causes the outpouring of knowledge and divine revelation in multiplicity, is known as Sophia/Shekhinah and the Holy Spirit in the two Abrahamic religions, and as Spenta Ȃrmaiti in Zoroastrianism. Ȃrmaiti’s function is to convey intellect and good thought (Vohu Manah) to the Zoroastrian believer and to inspire love and cooperation to expand Asha or divine order. Spenta Ȃrmaiti, both ontologically and epistemologically, acts as the mediator between divinity and earthly souls and is responsible for carrying and delivering supreme wisdom. Her feminine aspect is attributed to her role in receiving divine intellect and its transmission to the receptive. The condition for attaining this intuitive wisdom is not rational contemplation but humble and sincere devotional faith and love.
