Analysis of the Problem of Rightfulness and Salvation Based on Analogical Gradation Approach

Abstract

 
Regarding the rightfulness and salvation within the perspective of religions, there are mainly three approaches of exclusivism, inclusiveness and pluralism, each of which has its own merits and demerits. The analogical gradation approach is proposed as a new alternative theory which attempts to be free from those demerits but possess the merits. Of course, there are many similarities between this approach and religious inclusiveness, especially in the Islamic tradition, but they are not necessarily the same. In this approach, recognizing the absolute divine truth, the totality of religions’ teachings, openness of prosperity and salvation are gradually explained, such that all divine religions, and sometimes some non-divine religions, benefit from the absolute truth and the way of salvation in a gradual and hierarchical manner. However, it is different in that every later divine religion, such as Islam, has the perfections of the earlier religions and contains some new teachings that may not exist in others. In addition, all divine religions share the most gradual commonality especially in regard to fundamental beliefs. Therefore, the extent to which the followers of religions benefit from the truth, they have proportionate access to the way of salvation. In this regard, by referring to the holy Quran, such factors as graded unity of revelation, straightforwardness, the graded reality of Islam, plurality of religious beliefs, and the importance of the divine beauty and compassion can explain the rational feature of the analogical gradation approach to the study of rightfulness and salvation. In this article, while seeking an effective approach to rationally answer the question of rightfulness and salvation within the perspectives of religions is deemed important, an attempt is made to examine the analogical gradation approach.
